Since the sanctions era, the lack of private sector jobs in Iraq has been a persistent, toxic problem, leaving millions dependent on the state. Until there is sustained focus on this challenge, Iraq will continue to drift from crisis to crisis. My latest:

Good news for Iraq generally and for Allawi specifically as it reduces tensions with the US. This does not preclude the possibility of more targeted sanctions for individuals or specific entities

If Turkey's claim of airstrikes is correct and assuming Syrian S-300s are still deployed at Masyaf, another escalation could have occurred very quickly.

Did Iraq ratify the New York Convention for arbitration? Cabinet approved in 2018 amid package of World Bank assistance at Kuwait conference. By my understanding parliament must ratify as per Article 61. Current big arbitration case is ICSID. Iraq's parliament exists in paralysis

On new Iraqi PM Mohammad Allawi: Professional, reformist in a technical sense. Anti-Muhasasa. Good relations with everyone. Worked well with the US back in the day. He’s the best option for Iraq's political elite. But, he is supported by Iran.

Not sure why some are lamenting the ban of ZeroHedge. Absurdly irresponsible tweet on the Wuhan crisis. Isn't it just a junk alt right blog peddling nonsense, trying to be edgy?

One report on Iran's ballistic missiles from 2018 suggested the GPS+INS guided Fateh-110 had a 250 metre CEP. A 2017 report suggested Iran's claim of a 10 metre CEP for the Fateh-313 was "highly unlikely."

Imagine trying to argue on 2 January: Iran's ballistic missiles have a CEP of less than 20 metres, maybe less and US will openly target high ranking Iranians, even in the absence of major conflict. I think most people would have dismissed those views as being a bit dramatic

This is just incredible. A trend building for some time dramatically accelerated in 2019. In terms of their energy relationship with Saudi Arabia, U.S. and China have swapped places.
