2015 paper showing how a Chinese bat recombined with a SARS-CoV can use ACE2 to efficiently enter human airway cells and replicate, suggesting “a potential risk of SARS-CoV re-emergence from viruses currently circulating in bat populations.”

Where did this coronavirus outbreak start? Was it the seafood market? What do bats have to do with it? Scientists are mining nCoV's genome for clues--and trying to dispel conspiracy theories and shaky assertions.

⁩ I love biorxiv and all it represents. But this needs removed now! It is dangerous and negative to a major global health concern

German cluster. High viral load after recovery of mild illness while being asymptomatic and feeling well - role of mildly sick patients in driving transmission has to be reconsidered in light of this?

One of the tricky - but understandable - things is that papers are being published or preprinted so quickly that what is written is often rapidly out-of-date. Technically, as it was discovered second, the question should be whether RatG13 is the same species as 2019-nCoV.

It is kind of different to 2004 SARS but similar to many batCov. These viruses are very diverse in nature, so it's not surprising.

Very important point. Although there is clearly recombination in this wider group of viruses, there is no current evidence that recombination is responsible for the emergence of #2019-nCoV. Similar conclusion here:

We've been misquoted as concluding #2019-nCoV is recombinant. Just to be clear, there’s no evidence that recombination has anything to do with nCoV's emergence & there's now a non-recombinant bat virus that clusters relatively closely to it see Fig 1B in .
