Being Irish during the whole Brexit thing is like being the neighbour of that guy who was building his own rocket to prove that the Earth is flat. His inevitable failure is going to be all his own fault but it's still probably going to burn down your conservatory.

And can I just say a hearty thank you guys for playing Ghost of Christmas Future on that particular decision. Really settled a few long running arguments.
-
Time will tell! Personally I prefer democracy and a few rough years than the opposite.
-
Please don't abuse such a good word as democracy. Check its definition, pay regard to how restricted the advisory ref was, the foreign interference, the lies, lack of information, and then use the word advisedly.
-
I have all of that relentlessly. You? Because Government told every household it would implement the decision. The only foreign interference that helped Leave was that from Obama. Lies sadly told from both side and all the information people could need is available on the net
-
In a leaflet which I didn't get, an ex-pat citizen in France. Obama? It was the *democratic* responsibility of the gov (
#Tories) to inform the public, not direct them to the internet. Your arguments are as thin tissue. Pathetic. -
Can anyone explain to me how Obama fits in here? I'm confused. What did he do?
-
I was responding to a listed tweet that included a complaint about foreign interference
-
Oh right.. You were talking bullshit with no meaning at all. Got it.

Always fascinating to see Brexiteers who don’t really remember what happened: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-eighth_Amendment_of_the_Constitution_of_Ireland …
-
Ireland voted against the Constitution (which didn’t go down well, how dare they?). So the EC rebadged it the Lisbon Treaty, played around with a bit of wording but kept the intent the same, and then told them to accept it. Which they did.
-
No, the first ref was also on Lisbon. They leveraged the result for a renegotiation and opt-outs which then secured a massive majority on a higher turnout. Contrary to the narrative pushed by Brexiteers, Remain is at 92% in Ireland:https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/more-than-90-of-irish-people-want-to-stay-in-eu-poll-reveals-1.3488112 …
-
When did I say Ireland would vote to leave? You do know that even the authors of the EU constitution say that it is basically the same as the Lisbon Treaty?
-
The Irish accepted the Lisbon Treaty by 67%, so even then what’s your point? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-eighth_Amendment_of_the_Constitution_of_Ireland …
-
It was in direct response to your previous tweet. I’m struggling to see what point you are making either.
-
That the referendum was not “ignored” as you claim, or that there was no democracy. The No campaign said a rejection of the treaty would give them concessions, they then got those concessions, and so the Lisbon Treaty was passed. My point was your understanding of it was wrong.
-
The idea that meaningful concessions were given anywhere to Lisbon is laughable. I worked for a proEU MEP at the time. The purpose of the constitution was fulfilled by Lisbon. It just amended all the old treaties to include everything it wanted. Referendums were irrelevant

So yes with Brexit, UK will be taking the EU rules on trade and standards, but have 0% of the vote to approve them. Sooner have shared sovereignty than little Englanders wet dream exceptionalism
-
Most trade relationships in the world have mutual recognition of standards. That the EU tries to force its standards on the world is one of Prime reasons why it strikes such few deals with economies of significance

Or we could go the British route of having no influence over the EU but accepting it's rules. I prefer we just stand back and laugh at our neighbours as they crash and burn.
-
As is your right. Quite remarkable that you think you have influence over the EU. I’ve spent enough time in Brussels to have seen the esteem in which small economies are held - it really isn’t what you think it is
-
I don't think Ireland has ideas of grandeur as to its place in the world. Unlike our near neighbours . But in general we recognise the positive effect the EU has had on our nation. It's not perfect but I don't think I want to destroy all that's good about it based on xenophobia.
-
Irish influence. The Irish border is one of the main sticking points . The Irish government could bring the whole thing to a halt over this question
