Hmong leaders see three parts to their task: 1) connecting those at risk with help, legal resources 2) preventing spread of misinformation about who risks 3) rallying opposition to Trump policy These things are complicated and in some ways in tension.

Ka Lo talked about resistance from some leaders who are afraid of seeming partisan by speaking out, and that is a real factor. But there are many in the Hmong community whose fears are more fundamental. They’re afraid that by speaking out they’ll invite retribution.

I did talk to people who have family members under a deportation order, in some cases because of decades-old offenses. They didn’t want to go on the record about it. They see real risks to speaking publicly.

Ultimately it is a relatively small number of people who could be deported. On the other hand, as Chai Moua says here, Laos is truly alien to virtually all of these people’s lives.pic.twitter.com/z17txvlhAf
