“I just had a moment to myself, when a lot of things was coming to light, where I realized, ‘A lot of these dudes do look to me. They want to hear what I have to say.’” I wrote about the undeniable presence — and impact — of Tyrann Mathieu.

  2. And Pat Mahomes arriving to the locker room on a golf cart with his girlfriend and sister, before bounding in. Last night was about Andy Reid’s past first. But it was about Mahomes’ future second. If felt like a beginning. He’s going to be in our lives for a long, long tome.

  3. Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle, and a few friends rapping every word to “Dreams and Nightmares.” How different that felt to the Niners locker room. And the tiny things that separate those realities.

  4. Tyrann Mathieu standing in the locker room. He’s 27 years old, and he’s already lived five different football lifetimes. Ten if you consider what he experienced before anyone even knew his name.

  5. I wrote about the Niners today, but there are so many Chiefs moments I’ll remember from last night: The look between a Philly reporter and Andy Reid as they talked for a moment. A look that seemed to carry two decades’ worth of weight, without either saying a word.

  6. I’d make a joke, but I cover a league that uses two old guys carrying a chain attached to two sticks to measure stuff.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Offensive linemen are like any athlete. They can get in grooves where the basket feels 10 feet wide or they’re seeing every pitch. Mitch pretty much had three Jordan shrug games in a row.

As a guy who went to school equidistant from St. Louis and Kansas City, this year brought championships for all my college friends who'd never seen their favorite team win it. That part is great. Blues and Chiefs fans are some of the best I've ever met. (cc: )

The Niners averaged 6.5 yards per play on Sunday. That would’ve been tied for the best mark in the NFL during the regular season.

For years, Andy Reid the decision-maker sabotaged Andy Reid the offensive genius. Now — fair or unfair — the same cloud will hang over Kyle Shanahan. On falling short, and the tiny margins between becoming a punchline and becoming immortal:

Also, for the record: I think trying to squeeze the game and limit possessions against Mahomes is smart and necessary. But every time you have the ball, you should be trying to score touchdowns. Because you're gonna need 'em.

In the NFCG, Raheem Mostert faced 8 or more defenders on 13.7 percent of his carries. That would've been the 14th lowest rate in the league this season. The Packers kept playing nickel and dime (for some reason), so the Niners kept gashing them. Yes.

But this isn't how offense works. They're not a "running" team. They run when it's advantageous to run. This design to Kittle is the perfect call against this look and front, and Chris Jones just makes a play. Sometimes, guys do.

There's 5 min left here. If you run it twice, you give Mahomes the ball with 3 min instead? Who cares? The goal should be never letting him touch it again. The Niners didn't lose because they were too aggressive. They lost because they weren't aggressive enough.

If you wanna question Kyle Shanahan not calling timeout at the end of the first half or not going for it on 4th and 2, you should. If you wanna question this play, lose me. This is a perfect call. You bleed games with first downs, not run plays.

Going back through and rewatching some stuff — I think Chris Jones had a real MVP case. He created the first pick. His deflections were HUGE. And he had multiple key pressures. In a game where he had one tackle, no sacks, and no QB hits, he was KC’s best player. That’s amazing.

On early downs in neutral game scripts, the Chiefs were — by far — the most pass-heavy team in the NFL this season. Patrick Mahomes just had one of the 5 most productive play-action Super Bowls ever. You don't need a run-heavy offense to hurt teams with play action.
