Fascsinating scoop by that Netanyahu rejected an Omani initiative for Israel-Iran talks 7 yrs ago. Most interesting question: Why are in-the-know Israelis leaking this super-secret story today?

Looks like at least one of the three countries that sent reps to the White House Trump plan unvelling on Tuesday is doing some serious backpeddling.

Arab League statement today offers potential opening to Israel, stating Israel-Arab state normalization can come with acceptance and implemention of API. Even Bibi in 2016 nodded to API. Deft (non-US) diplomacy could build on this w/reciprocal steps once Trump thing fully fails.

What a crappy week. Another cynical body blow to the cause of Middle East peace, then Britain’s blow to the idea of Europe that’s contributed to peace after 2 world wars, and now a new low in the steady breakdown of our republic’s checks and balances.

You’re right of course. So rather than fall into that Faustian choice, is there a way for the national movement to convene to try to map out some third way forward? Then initiate consults w/Arabs, starting w/Jordan & forge a way out of the box? Unsatisfying, but creativity needed

I disagree on both counts. This is most pro-settler “deal” the US has ever presented. Not so good for Israelis seeking genuine & credible peace & to secure a Jewish & democratic state. And while Trump team clearly moving goal posts in one direction, they can also be moved again.

Putin: "Wow, Bibi, what do you have on the guy? I mean I thought I had some good dirt, but to get him to give you all that for nothin--you must have some great $%*t"

Seems that we have an ambassador to the ancient Land of Israel, not to the modern internationally recognized State of Israel.

This line of thinking is not original, it comes from Louis XIV: L'État, c'est moi!

But Kushner is right about one thing— if you’re a state you don’t call for days of rage. You challenge in international fora, you mobilize allies, you even, at your own peril, call for war.

They are Israeli citizens. They would literally be disenfranchised with their citizenship then transferred.

A smart and sober take from my longtime State Department colleague and friend who headed our ConGen mission in Jerusalem (back when we engaged Palestinians) and I headed the Quartet mission on the eastern part of the city.
