The price of strawberries is 3 percent lower and all it took was having a society where trust is replaced by suspicion and normlessness is accelerating

This is a fun way to say "We have lots of bigots who hate immigrants for no good reason, and I'd rather pander to them than improve every non-bigot's life"

* Immigrants come, demonstrably improve economy * Trust is lowered because bigots lash out, creating divisive politics "Let's blame the immigrants for this situation and not the bigots" is a galaxy brain take

I'm not talking about political divisiveness. I'm talking about a society where there's implicit trust and shared conventions besides butt-chugging Netflix

The shared conventions we had are currently being shredded the fastest by those who are most anti-immigrant, so I'm really not sure of your point. The US in particular does an amazing job of assimilating and Americanizing immigrants.

The shared conventions of anglo-protestant settler culture are being shredded by people who are skeptical of a historically new open-borders fundamentalism? Or you men conventions that only go back to the 70s?

"The shared conventions of anglo-protestant settler culture" is a meaningless concept. There were many different distinct protestant settler cultures with WILDLY different conventions. There is no single 'protestant settler culture'.

Of course there isn't, just like there is no single color "pink". That doesn't mean that pink doesn't have distinguishing characteristics or that all shades of pink are as similar to green as there are to each other

Cavaliers, Quakers, Puritans and Scots Irish borderers are much more green and pink than pink and slightly-darker-pink.

I'd recommend you read Albion's Seed in order to rid yourself of the false notion that there's any kind of vaguely similar 'english protestant culture' that came over with settlers in the 1600s.

I don't think there ever was a homogeneous culture. But it looks as good as homogeneous when we zoom out to a cosmopolitan scale, what we have today
