The shared conventions we had are currently being shredded the fastest by those who are most anti-immigrant, so I'm really not sure of your point. The US in particular does an amazing job of assimilating and Americanizing immigrants.
The shared conventions of anglo-protestant settler culture are being shredded by people who are skeptical of a historically new open-borders fundamentalism? Or you men conventions that only go back to the 70s?
"The shared conventions of anglo-protestant settler culture" is a meaningless concept. There were many different distinct protestant settler cultures with WILDLY different conventions. There is no single 'protestant settler culture'.
The idea that what makes America strong is some 1600's strain of Super English Protestant Thought is frankly laughable. As though waves of Slavic/Irish/Italian/Catholic/German, etc immigration hadn't completely changed the country 100x over before the 1950s even began.
Nativists have been saying that immigration will Ruin American Culture and Certainly Lead To Out Downfall for hundreds of years. They've always, always been wrong. America is great at taking immigrants and making them into Americans who share our values.
Lol get rekt white nationalists. @ne0liberal is busting out the postmodernist philosophy.
Not postmodern; just pure, simple, unadulterated history. It's this simple. White nationalists unwilling to face their shortcomings, failures, won't take responsibility as individuals -- so claim racial 'pride' & 'protection' over achievements of arbitrarily selected 'ancestors'
I don’t disagree with any of that, just pointing out that all of what they said earlier, deconstructing the myth of American identity as inherently European and Protestant is a pretty standard postmodernist take. It also has the benefit of being correct.
