I’m 51 from NY. Same in school. In college I was a history major but was focusing more on European history so the Civil War never really came up. I think I started to rethink Lee then. The Marble Man which started Lee revisionism came out in 1977.

IIRC in Guns of the South (a time travel take on the war published in the early 90s) Harry Turtledove specifically in his author notes rejected The Marble Man and portrayed Lee as a Christian Gentleman who ends up abolishing slavery. The film Gettysburg shows Lee the same way
