    There's a lot that's happened since I wrote SubSonic, Massive, and all of the other goofy things I've tried. I encourage everyone to explore and try/fail, but I also encourage you to learn as much as you can before you waste hours and hours walking the same painful path as others

    So, if you're considering writing a data access thing... please read more than 's post. Maybe also read more than 's work on the Repository/Unit of Work pattern. Realize that the road to the developer hell is paved with ORMs...

    My reply has always been the same: "happy to have given you some work!". Honestly - not sure if those projects would have existed if there wasn't an alternative to Giant ORM that let people get work done. Their projects grew and they needed Jimmy. Yay for them!

    I've had some fun with "light" data access stuff since then - always focused on quick/easy. Every time I see at a conference he likes to remind me how many times he's ripped Massive (mine) and Peta Poco, Dapper, etc out of projecs that have grown beyond that stage...

    At first I was like... "you should use NHibernate" or one of the bigger, heavyweight ORMs out there. I wrote SubSonic for simpler use cases... or at least that's what I told myself. Eventually I realized what I had gotten into.

    Years later, with SubSonic (and the help of ) I was able to come up with some patchwork fixes for people that had hundreds (!) of tables spread across multiple servers and schemas. Crazy! But their devs were using the thing I wrote and they were tired of the mess...

    In 1997 I wrote a thing that pinged an AS400 from my ASP classic site, sending order information... somewhere. Not my problem! I just wanted a 200 back with an "OK" from the PERL script I called. That was Pioneer Electronics and their first ecommerce site... that I built!
