I’m some way off mastering the intricacies (or even the basics) of gull identification. However, it doesn’t stop me being enthralled when a large roost takes to the air, en masse, like these at Calvert Jubilee last week.

Sometimes you just wish you hadn’t eaten that last mouthful! 😝 Male green woodpecker Calvert Jubilee this morning.

Nice to see one of the bitterns again at Calvert Jubilee this morning - having not seen them during several previous visits over the past 10 days. Good to meet too - this bittern appeared just 2mins after he arrived! 🍀😊

Interesting to watch the movements in the neck of this male Green woodpecker - associated with the hyoid apparatus and extremely long tongue - as it forages at Calvert Jubilee. Also the use of the tail as a brace.

Decent views of this Cetti’s warbler in the reedbeds at Calvert Jubilee yesterday. Unfortunately, it chose to sing only when I wasn’t filming 🤨 (and no, I haven’t been able to determine the ring number 😊)

Whilst the bitterns at Calvert Jubilee are usually to be found at water level, occasionally they have loftier ambitions: this one spent nearly an hour at the top of the reeds shortly after dawn today 😊

It’s not often that the bitterns are visible once they’re inside the reedbeds at Calvert Jubilee; however, a fresh gusting wind permitted intermittent glimpses of this individual earlier today.

Some of the fieldfares & redwings feeding on the partially-flooded main meadow at Gallows Bridge a few days ago. Nice side-by-side comparison shot towards the end 😊

Enjoyed watching these bank voles going about their business next to one of the hides at Calvert Jubilee yesterday - one of at least 10 mammalian species I’ve seen there over the past week alone.

A real privilege: extended views of a young male merlin as it bathed in the floodwaters, then, somewhat waterlogged, dried & preened itself on a nearby fencepost at Gallows Bridge today. High winds and poor light = dodgy video quality though.

Probably my best-ever views of a weasel, today at Calvert Jubilee Reserve. Certainly tricky to film though! 😊 All shots half-speed slo-mo.

I’m continually amazed at how kestrels manage millimetre-perfect head positioning whilst hovering, even, as here, in a gusting wind. Gallows Bridge Farm (seasonal hide).

Thanks for all likes, RTs etc - I really didn't think it would create such interest! 😀

Bittern appeared from L side of channel; it uses that area often & may've been sitting just out of sight (of camera); possibly startled rail during KF fight. My impression was that KF caught rail by surprise, the 3 birds just happened to converge at same spot simultaneously.

More context: attack was in channel btwn reedbeds (photo), at noon. Channel iced up to 3m from end. Rails seen swimming across end of ice during morning. KF flew along channel to perch on reeds at end of ice; quickly dropped down, grabbed by rail emerging from reedbed to R.
