Preliminary biofuel sales for 2019 may be released at the end of this month.

Biofuel, especially biodiesel, is starting to make inroads. Palm oil as a feedstock took off in 2017, but then when the data were released and consumers realised, there was a decline in 2018 almost as sudden.

Some incentives to buying EVs are being rolled back in some parts of the country: avoidance of road tolls, free use of public transport lanes, and others. This was going to happen with increased share of EVs, but has come sooner than many expected bc of success of the policies.

Monthly sales statistics suggest the possibility that Norway has reached a plateau of EV sales, with a lacklustre 30% in December. The average for 2019 was bolstered by significant deliveries of Tesla Model 3's, which had been ordered in the years before.

Electric passenger car sales reached 42% of the new-car market in 2019, with plug-in hybrids an additional 14%. Pure fossil cars were only 32% of sales. How far will this trend continue?

When we look at how far passenger cars with different types of engines have travelled in Norway, we see a similar effect. Electric cars have turned the curve of fossils in private transport. Total distance continues to increase, but so does population.

Sales of petrol in Norway have been declining for years, following the transition to diesel passenger cars. But sales of diesel started to decline in 2017. Biodiesel? No, because sales of biodiesel are included in these figures: total (fossil+bio) road diesel sales are falling.

I imagine in the scene that follows this one she realises the graph of a parabola her hand is poised over has been neatly mislabelled as x=y². Then everything falls into place nicely.

These are the data that EIA report publicly here: IEA data were obtained directly via agreement.

3/ When converted to energy units, IEA's data are very similar to the official, NBS data, while EIA are significantly higher. It appears that EIA (implicitly) assumes that the non-combustible washing wastes are combusted and yield significant energy.

2/ The EIA's production data in physical units (tonnes) exactly match data from China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), except for some minor revisions. The IEA's data in tonnes are lower, because they exclude non-combustible wastes from washing coal.
