If you want to recycle, go solar, eat less meat, drive a hybrid car, that’s great, I support that. But this old idea that if we all just chip in one reusable shopping bag at a time is a way that government & corps avoid responsibility for the URGENT large-scale changes we need.

Is this true? Absolutely. Will you ever get people to give up their Big Macs of their own free will for an abstract concept that it will save their grandchildren? Never. But if you regulated/taxed the beef industry so hamburgers cost $30, that would help.https://twitter.com/Zimb0/status/1124433151227498496 …

And would that mean tons of jobs lost, entire industries shut down, and a lot of really pissed off McRib fans? Yes. But that's one example of the scale of change we have to be willing to allow global governments to make if we want to continue on with this whole civilization thing

In closing, my point is that you're doing much more to help the earth if you chow a Big Mac while driving your gas-guzzling SUV door-to-door to help canvas for pro-climate progressive pols than if you carefully sort your recyclables but vote Repub. Thx for coming to my TED Talk.

It seems some clarification on my point is needed: You, lovely person reading this, are doing a great job with your eco-friendly living, and I'm proud of you. But 60 million people voted for DONALD FUCKING TRUMP, and they'll take us straight to hell without policies & regulations

there are ways to lower your own carbon footprint via food choices, but you are 100% correct that putting the onus on an individual's consumption for what's happening to the planet is crazy, unfair and intentional.

This mentality is just wrong. Without government regulation, people embraced supporting energy efficient appliances. People embraced fuel efficient cars. Reusable bags. Over 50% of the US population is concerned with climate change. If they mobilize, it makes a big difference

You gotta start somewhere, but it’s bs when people ONLY do this sort of thing and assume they “did their part” and hopes it all works out.
