I don’t think ‘there are reasons these works are so popular’ is any sort of argument against ‘these books are extremely derivative’. If anything, publishing returns suggest the two often go together. And they really are derivative: I read The Worst Witch after HP & was shocked

I don't think anyone struggles with the thought of why HP was popular. Its pretty self evident But its author showing her TERF colours after the fact is the complicating issue which is seperate from the polularity of a childrens book about wizards and magic

I know why it was popular, because the one publisher that did publish HP gave her one hell of a marketing campaign that appealed to so many parents and children.... ...Not all of them, of course. My 12 year old ass was reading The Time Machine by that point.

Seriously, someone good marketing is how a lot of garbage books get really popular. Twilight and 50 Shade of Grey are prime examples of this.

They popular because they're marketed towards little children

Yep, that's an underhand tactic for a publisher of books for children to use.

They're popular because of marketing. And because people like things that are familiar.

They came along at the right time and happened to be something that worked. I mean they're not well written, the world building is crap, there are enough offensive stereotypes invoked to offend everyone except thin white gentile men etc etc etc.
