If I upgraded but didn't open new channels I should be good to wait for patch then update? No risks to my existing channels?

that's correct, the versions that are unable to own *new* channels with each other (from lnd's PoV) are the *latest* versions of c-lightning and eclair lnd's validation of the new feature was too strict, which was cleared up in this spec PR: github.com/lightning/bolt 0.14.1 🔜

in the end "BOLT compliance" is somewhat of a moving target given in this case some nodes shipped before a recent PR to add a feature bit and some did afterwards we all should be compatible now up to the the latest commit in that PR linked above!
