We just need a full DM app, with search, history, and a group DM mode that works like Slack. Twitter DMs are one of the most valuable communications tools I use, but the experience is garbage.https://twitter.com/ericajoy/status/994378758428618752 …

So much of early twitter feature dev was hindered through tech at the time/not understanding relational data models - cost or efficiency. I assume they’ve got that now (?) but so many years lost.

I’m thinking about how dms were accessed/stored between 2010-2015....hard to see how any product manager could make this work, at scale, with consistency. Timelines can miss a tweet and you don’t lose trust like a dm thread.

Oh that’s interesting. I mean, I know architecture influences these things. But in terms of missed market opportunities, DM may be the biggest.

Not saying it wasn’t possible - but the void between actual tech implementation/ architecture of data storage during those times and product dev was large and vast.

There we’re a few really cool hackweek projects that tried this and ran into major and often unexpected issues
