Another note on this topic: When tech companies do layoffs, engineers tend to get recruiter emails. Non-engineering folks do not. Especially if they’re in specialized roles for which the market is smaller. You might be the link they need.

I would be absolutely down to do this if experience hadn’t taught me that even responding to a cold recruiting email results in them doubling down and hammering you with emails. I have literally had to say “no means no” to a recruiter, which is not something I wish to repeat.

And that’s a super common experience that I’ve had, too. But in my very lucky interactions with three very awesome recruiters in 2011, it was amazing to have someone on my side when I knew nobody.
