Hi, happy Tuesday. Let's talk about tech recruiting agencies for a moment. We've all received the emails "Hey {name}, your background looks amazing!" and we've conditioned ourselves to loathe, ignore or politely decline the advances because they sound like a scam. 1/*

When I moved back to SF, I signed up on Dice (yeah, I know), and began the onslaught of tech recruiter firm emails. I was desperate for work and had no idea what I was doing. I met with a few shady firms who wanted to get a contract, had no interest in helping me as a person. 4/*

That feedback and those interviews were invaluable. Having someone on your side, when you're struggling through impostor syndrome and also trying to find a job at the same time, is an amazing thing. They want to get you hired as much as you want the job. 6/*

What I'm saying is this: If you're in a position of comfort, maybe direct those recruiters toward someone in your life who might need a helping hand and someone in their side of the ring to help them along. Side note: Recruiting is hard, often thankless work.

Another note on this topic: When tech companies do layoffs, engineers tend to get recruiter emails. Non-engineering folks do not. Especially if they’re in specialized roles for which the market is smaller. You might be the link they need.
