/4 IMO If your org is more focused on hiring rockstars, than mentorship, sponsorship, and giving people a chance, you're org is not worth the effort and you're missing out on the people who will drive your success later.

More powerful than any degree is code on the internet - a github account with things you’ve done, contributions to open source projects etc etc

I manage a team that works with search. We do algorithm thingies and computer sciency stuff most of the time. Nobody has a CS degree, and they are all the real shitzky (it just happened, absolutely nothing against any background).
