My experience with parental leave has made me much more aware of how absolutely fucked that system is for folks who don’t have paid leave from their employer. Our program is split between the company and EDD family leave and even with the company’s full support it’s a nightmare.

Luckily I have savings to float by while I wait weeks for EDD to cut a check. For someone who loves check to check and doesn’t have a great job, and savings, and family support, they’d be screwed.

Also, given how 2019 has gone, I have strong opinions on how our program uses the same EDD pool as caring for a sick family member but that’s a shitpost for another day.
