Unpopular opinion: In theory I'm fine with the role of Developer Advocate, but in practice it so often involves being a social media influencer-- but on behalf of just one big corporation-- without being honest about that fact. Unfollowing devrel folks here has been a good move.

I see where the idea comes from cuz my engineer friends think so too, and I even had tweeted similar ("being influencer marketing") in past too. The fact is, advocates who quietly code, document, teach, support etc. are often obscured by who are loud & show off jetset lifestyles!

Dev Rel is *social* engineering on top of software engineering. People want to follow because of the personal side of the company, the individuals who make it work. If someone's impersonal online, it can feel like a signal of disinterest in the devs struggle, instill distrust
