    The decision to "suppress" (IJSEM), and journals is crazy. But rather than just asking to reinstate them, why not use this as an opportunity to reassess our relationship with Journal Impact Factor™ ? Don't use JIF. It's stupid.

    Just noticed a new APC-OA Elsevier journal: ‘Environmental Challenges’. So new it’s not even in yet. It’s doing the usual sales tactic of waiving the $1800 APC until 31 August 2021 😔. I feel like I’m advertising the journal just by tweeting this *shudders*

    It was a tough job to whittle down the eclectic bunch of papers that I handled at last year, but these four stuck in my mind. Historical documents, cool non-model organisms, nifty social media meta-science, and the "chongololo" from my childhood; what's not to love?

    Senior editor chose these four as his favorite papers from last year - millipede genomes, new fluorescent proteins from jellyfish, 300 years of smallpox, and the Twitter conversation around preprints
