Geraldine Heng: wmn/feminist and LGBTQ scholars have been part of the profession for 20 years. Not so POC. Had to talk about difference while minimizing performance of difference.

Heng: who decides what is canonical or important? Own work in global MA is shaped by her subject, position, makes it easier to identify “acts of race.” Book “Invention of Race in European MA” appearing next week.

Heng: Why was Global MA so widely accepted when Race in MA met with so much resistance? The latter makes the field complicit.

Heng: This is not a plea for inclusion, this is a statement of the gains to the field by including us

Cord Whitaker: accepts Heng’s def of race as “structural relationship for the management of human differences, rather than a substantive content.” Man of Laws’ tale as example of race thinking. Own experience in Honduras has had impact on his thinking

.@profcwhit: to be black in America is to be denied a premodern past. But in fact important medievalism in Harlem Renaissance: Fawcett. Must accept importance of race thinking in reference to MA, and medievalism to the study of modern race

Afrodesia McCannon: was warned by advisor she would be only African-American medievalist in the world. Is she doing her people a disservice by studying white men? Because she saw a puzzle there and her mind would not rest. Certain puzzles are easier for some people to figure out

McCannon: if the work of MOC is like that of feminists, it will become woven into the larger tapestry of Mdvl Std

.@wanchuankao: living in US south, with its concern with heritage, leads to study of how medieval past gets used eg by KKK. His position as “Chinaman” in the South. Teaching and interpellation: it’s not white fragility but white precarious.

Finn: in order to decolonize neo-medievalism, scholars need to push back in a more public way (via fandom?)

.@dorothyk98: best way to combat white supremacy is decolonizing medieval studies. That’s not the same thing as diversifying. Need equity and justice, not just diversity and inclusion. Need to consider our field’s history, epistemological of knowledge
