Very happy to see this piece out about the invisible labor of cultural criticism. Would love some claps and shares if it resonates with you. And if you happened to contribute to my anonymous survey on the topic, thanks!

Hey there! Nonbinary folks! Are you, or did you used to be, a young person? 😁 I'm working on a story idea about a specific aspect of being young and nonbinary and I would love to get a diverse group of folks to weigh in on their own experiences. DM or email: bexvankoot@gmail.com

Quiero agradecer a mi Colombia por darme el mapalé, la champeta, la salsa y los ritmos afro caribeños que me han permitido realizar el Super Bowl que desde hace más de una década soñé.

  11. Another fun fact about Congolese rumba: although it was mostly influenced by Cuban son (think Buena Vista Social Club), it's a misnomer as its name references a totally different Afro-Cuban genre, rumba. The "rumba craze" of the 1930s was a worldwide phenomenon where Cuban music

  12. So this is all part of a bi-directional loop of cultural influence b/w Africa & Latin America. We're more familiar with the mutual influences b/w African & Af-Am/Jamaican musicians (James Brown & Fela, African reggae artists) but the connection w/ Lat Am isn't as widely discussed

  13. Yes, the Congolese guitar tradition is everything!! Also, fun fact about Congolese soukous influencing Colombian champeta: soukous itself derives from the influence of Cuban son on Congolese musicians dating back to 1940s - music was first referred to as "rumba"

Two years ago I found out about champeta, the first contemporary Black Colombian music genre. It’s heavily rooted in soukous, a Congolese music genre. Here’s a playlist I made of champeta songs.
