Culture is part of the unholy trinity—culture, chaos, and cock-up—which roam through our versions of history, substituting for traditional theories of causation. – Filipe Fernández–Armesto "Pathfinders: A Global History of Exploration"

1909 Leo Baekeland announced his creation of a synthetic plastic called Bakelite. It was exceptional because of its nonconductivity making it the ideal material for electrical insulators, radio & telephone casings. Image: a bakelite moulding press 1945 and lamp holder poster

I’m not spending month moderating twitter arguments about/defending the achievements of black mathematicians. Every thread has 5-7 sources. That’s plenty. This is Twitter, not a PhD examination. Blocking arguments that others deserve credit. Sorry not sorry.

Worth noting. This makes but journalists walking out of a government press briefing in protest at attempts to ban those it doesn’t like does not. You could get the impression that democracy in the UK is in some trouble.

A map of Africa from a book in my collection published in Philadelphia by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. in 1853. Note the inset of Liberia with notes mentioning the “immigrant population is is about 6000, and the native 140,000.” Also note the reference to Napoleon and St. Helena.
