Wow, it's encouraging to see all the interest in this post! If you're angry with what you see, consider following and supporting a group like @BlueVentures that is successfully working to protect coral reefs and the local people who depend on them.https://blueventures.org/

This is like carving your name into an animal. Next tome I see you I’ll carve my name in your arm
-
Bad comparison. Corals can't feel pain. But yea no one should do this it's disrespectful
-
How do you know? You're just a watermelon
-
Wow i love twitter
-
What’s funny is the watermelon is very well wrong- corals do feel pain, they have a simple nervous system called a nerve net. They lack a brain, but they react to being snipped to make more frags, they react to being touched, or hit, and water flow. Don’t speak before you know.
-
Actually its widely agreed within oceanography that because the coral nervous system is so simplistic its highly unlikely that theyre able to feel pain. They can feel touch & react to that but its their best scientific postulation that they lack the brain needed to interpret pain
-
Actually that’s head scientists attempting to disregard the fact that a nervous system directly corresponds to being able to feel- intensity of feeling=intensity of pain, they can agree on it but in other realms a nervous system- of any kind, means ability to process pain.
-
No. Having a nervous system simply implies the ability to feel; to certain degrees. You need a brain to interpret those feelings into different sensations such as pain. “Head scientists” or not, that’s widely understood in science.

Coral police..
-
We police those who need to be, hurting another living creature is wrong no matter what you say to justify it, and no I’m not innocent either but I can own up it and do as little harm as possible

One of the saddest things I’ve seen was the lines of tourists who jump in, get pulled down by two divers, get their photo taken, snap off a piece of coral, then return back to the boat to let the next person repeat.
-
The
#SCUBA industry term for this is “tea bagging” -
Why is there even a name for this? The industry folks should be ashamed.
-
It’s used as an insult. Not a option in the catalogue.
-
I thought it was obvious lol
