This ( interviewing his brother ) is one of best things I've ever heard. The story itself is stunning, as is model of challenge as tool for increasing clarity. Every teacher, parent, etc., should strive to create safety for this kind of challenge.

This analogy--from someone who fought suicidal thoughts for over 40 years--poignantly encompasses what it feels like to fight this fight.

  4. This is a provocative case that most people’s relationship to the news is not what they think it is. And an insightful study of pseudo-events, extending “The Image” and “Amusing Ourselves to Death” to the present. Best parts in screenshots. From

  7. Just read 's article in Scientific American on large sex differences in personality and their implications. Another case in which I'm impressed by his rare dedication to both analytic rigor and good will for all. (His citations are useful too!)

  9. The Economist lucidly explained how some researchers are disputing Thomas Piketty's claims (of “Capital in the 21st Century” fame) that the share of income and wealth in the top 1% has skyrocketed. The most honest answer? The data are insufficient for now.

  13. ... this would require that the car has a dangerous must-harm mode, in which it chooses who to hit and can't try to avoid everyone. But situations with detectable moral info + options are rare and shouldn't be considered pressing dilemmas. Paper: 2/2

  14. Large studies have probed people’s moral intuitions about who a driverless car should choose to hit given a forced dilemma. Some argue that intuitions should guide design. A paper by et al. solidified my intuition that this is poorly considered. In particular... 1/2

. published a video and article arguing that a famous paper did not demonstrate sex-biased hiring in orchestra auditions, nor does it live up to its reputation as the definitive study of biased hiring. How accurate are these charges? A thread: 1/

  19. Until reading recent blog posts, I had heard of the study many times and accepted the main conclusion. It had seemingly reliable signals of quality: authors from Harvard and Princeton, cited >1500 times in academic papers and endlessly in popular pieces. 9/

  20. So is it possible that blinded auditions helped women? Yes. Is there solid evidence in this paper? No. It is speculative and tendentious to declare one’s findings “economically significant” when the effect sizes were so uncertain. 8/
