Been thinking about the Philly yellow fever outbreak lately. It was an unmitigated disaster, killing, what, maybe 1 in 10 Philadelphians?

Philly was the seat of the federal government, and during the outbreak, George Washington is reported to have said, and I quote: "Yeah, fuck this shit, Martha." Literally left town to go back to Virginia. The city government broke down completely as elected officials fled.

What replaced the government? Really, it was an ad hoc war council of willing civic leaders who made, bankrolled, and enforced the city's rules and its response to the disaster.

What got the city through the outbreak was really civic mindedness. It did not alter the course of the disease, perhaps, but at least the children who were orphaned provided for, for instance. The bodies got buried.

Currently the federal government is at Mount Vernon, or as it is now called, Bedminster, New Jersey. (Goddamn, can you imagine George Washington tweeting about how great things are in Philly as he's taking Mare Horse One back to VA?)

I'm sorry. As I sit here watching exactly what epidemiologists said was going to happen happen, I'm despairing b/c I'm not seeing an ounce of the civic spirit in the GOP right now. Not an iota.

We have no excuse to be in the position we are. In 1793, they had no idea what was causing the outbreak (though one doctor noticed what looked like mosquito bites on his patients). This time the whole viral genome had been sequenced within a month of the virus's appearance!

We had every fucking advantage. We had time to prepare. We did almost nothing but wish real hard this would go away. AND 120,000 DEATHS LATER WE'RE STILL DOING IT.

My country, the last 4 years have shown me, is not what I thought it was. It's not even trying. Vast portions of the population simply do not give the tightest tiny shit about their fellow Americans.

When this is over, I want a reckoning. I want more than anything else to see those who through inaction, indifference, and disinterest have killed so many Americans held to account.

I'm just so damned frustrated and disgusted right now. All this suffering was unnecessary. All it took was the tiniest spark of decency, and we failed the test.

What do you mean by reckoning? Congressional investigations? Damning reports? People ostracized out of office? Criminal trials? I am all for a Warren Report-ish blue ribbon panel. Not so much for show trials.

Blue ribbon panel followed by appropriate legal action.
