also conodonts. people drilling for oil kept digging up these enigmatic teeth that appear in a lot of good places where you find oil... but no other fossils. ppl had to hypothesise about what the 'conodont animal' was. worked out it was probably a fish

then in the 80s, idk why it took them so long, but in the 80s ppl started looking at Lagerstätten (like the burgess shale deposits) and finally found conodont animals... eels babey!
