america is a fundamentally depressing country. secularized unitarian/quaker/etc. theocrats don't understand the human spirit, and somehow it works out that everything they do crushes it a little more

rightists love talking about history. the vikings this, the early modern germanics that, and so on. this is valid, but it's not *aesthetic* - aesthetics are a matter of the present day
