america is a fundamentally depressing country. secularized unitarian/quaker/etc. theocrats don't understand the human spirit, and somehow it works out that everything they do crushes it a little more

The fact that thousands of Poles work there no problem speaking little no Icelandic suggest it's not a big deal. Tons of them speak English too, much easier as an American probably

most people speak english but IME you'll need at least a dictionary to get past keflavik (unintuitive gas pumps)
