Income plays only a slight role.
Still some role - if you get cheap, shitty gear, you'll have a bad time and be less likely to do it again. But it's only one factor among many, and probably less important than the filter against people who don't have a car.

You honestly don't need to spend that much money on gear. It's camping. People have been doing it since prehistory. Just get a tarp and a mosquito net and a yoga mat and a blanket and some ropes and stakes for a grand total of 40 bucks tops. All can be had at home depot probably

single biggest filter is knowledge/inclination -- given those, there are cheap ways around all the other gates but people who could successfully camp on the cheap are probably rich enough to not have to, I guess
