So much of our “polarization” seems to be cooked up in a vat of social media, cable TV and talk radio. But put average citizens in the woods, camping miles from home, and chances are they’ll lend you their stove and perhaps share beer. https://nyti.ms/2CaQPcf

I realize your abject need to be contrary to the NYT but this is a bizarre take

What's bizarre about it? Campgrounds are heavily filtered. You have to be the sort of person who'd go camping - and you have to be functional enough to do it. Stronger filters (for personality type and quality) lead to better outcomes.

yeah huge selection effect - parks focus on entrance fees & gas but that’s rounding error cf. gear, knowledge

I guess it's more accurate to say the average American doesn't camp but the average camper can come from any sub group of white Americans.

Can come from any subgroup of white Americans, but has to be so inclined, be able to afford the gear and take the time, and so on.

Income plays only a slight role.

Still some role - if you get cheap, shitty gear, you'll have a bad time and be less likely to do it again. But it's only one factor among many, and probably less important than the filter against people who don't have a car.

You honestly don't need to spend that much money on gear. It's camping. People have been doing it since prehistory. Just get a tarp and a mosquito net and a yoga mat and a blanket and some ropes and stakes for a grand total of 40 bucks tops. All can be had at home depot probably
