What's bizarre about it? Campgrounds are heavily filtered. You have to be the sort of person who'd go camping - and you have to be functional enough to do it. Stronger filters (for personality type and quality) lead to better outcomes.

yeah huge selection effect - parks focus on entrance fees & gas but that’s rounding error cf. gear, knowledge

I guess it's more accurate to say the average American doesn't camp but the average camper can come from any sub group of white Americans.

Can come from any subgroup of white Americans, but has to be so inclined, be able to afford the gear and take the time, and so on.

mayb an east/west difference here but uh (there is a _lot_ of land you can get to by dirt road and camp on for free west of the 100th meridian or so)
