      Paywalls can work, but not for every outlet, says @arusbridger. 'If I was publishing @FT or @nytimes, I would have a paywall as their readers are well-off. @guardian readers are ‘not very rich'... so we tried to grow our #audience in a different way.'

          @danielionescu co-founder of local news site @thelincolnite: advertising brings in 50-60% of site's revenue - inc recruitment & event classifieds which are popular with smaller business advertisers. Site also diversifying income with events. 'Being seen as an underdog helps.'

          They still try to sell individual access to their small kingdoms. It will never work. The only way is a joint one-payment subscription service that allows access to articles of a wide range of papers+distributes the money according to what ppl read. The current per-newspaper...
