I wonder if a MutationObserver in the <head> would be able to move the src value to a data-src attribute by observing all mutations from start of page load.

I put this in <head> and normal <img> tags in <body>.
- No image requests visible in Firefox dev tools
- Safari shows requests but 0 bytes transferred
- Chrome seems to get 4 kb over the wire before calling it quits

This is awesome! It's only 4k, but terminated preloads do give me a little bit of the heebie jeebies. I’ve been doing something simpler, swapping an <a href="x.jpg" data-lazy>Image of y</a> for <img src="x" alt="y" /> on lazyload. Cons: sometimes visually jarring.
