We are delighted to say that the Government has conceded to our legal challenge and removed Lord Carlile as independent reviewer of Prevent. The truth is that the Government should never have appointed Lord Carlile in the first place.

The proposal to introduce an amnesty would mean that there could be no prospect of these allegations receiving an investigation, and for culpable parties to be brought to justice; effectively sanctioning impunity in the Armed Forces.

Moreover, recent third-party investigations into allegations that the UK has committed war crimes in Iraq & Afghanistan have established credible evidence of war crimes, & of systemic, deliberate failures by the Govt to investigate these claims.

Multiple int’l legal instruments consider that amnesties in respect of intentional killings are incompatible with the duty to respect & ensure the right to life, & to provide victims with an effective remedy.

And the press release here: “But interestingly, many in the intelligence and security community also support repatriation, to better exercise any necessary control or implement disengagement or rehabilitation measures.”

RWUK still advocates for the victims of the Troubles, including through advocating for disclosure of the Report & fighting against a blanket amnesty for UK soldiers. It is events like this that prove the need for transparency, accountability, & post-conflict justice.

On this day in 1972, the Bogside Massacre, or Bloody Sunday, occurred. British soldiers shot 30 unarmed civilians during a protest march in Derry, Northern Ireland, killing 13 and wounding 17, one of whom later died from the wounds. Post-conflict justice is an ongoing challenge.

We would also include that it is NEVER in the best interest of the child to be forcibly separated from their mother. Debate available here:

    4. Children should be repatriated with their mothers or primary care givers; 5. States should avoid taking measures which could result in a child becoming stateless (we would include both de facto and de cure); 5. Effective rehabilitation and reintegration should be ensured.

This resolution echoes a number of concerns that we have continually highlighted in our advocacy: 1. A gender-sensitive approach must be taken; 2. Children are victims first & foremost; 3. A childs-rights perspective contributes toward the national security of countries concerned

While the Belgium govt's Monday repatriation is a positive step for those children, it has not yet repatriated 10 other Belgian children for whom the Belgian courts ordered repatriation by 28 January. The Belgian gov't will be charged €50,000 per day it fails to assist them.

Back in November, the women fled to Turkey & handed themselves in to the Turkish police. The Belgian government asked the Turkish government to help extradite them to Belgium, but this hasn't yet happened. Their 2 youngest children remain with them in Turkey.
