I wrote a book. It’s called Eastern Span, and is a neo-noir set in Oakland, circa 2013-14. It’s 215 pages long. It includes amazing art by locals, and can be downloaded for free or $$$. All donations will go toward Bay Area homeless services. Get it:

I’m here to announce that I have officially joined the freelance writers boycott of The Outline, and that it has ~~VERY LITTLE~~ to do with the fact that they rejected my last dozen or so pitches.

“Staff salary” should be locked in as tightly as “design development” or “sales” or like “rent” or “insurance costs” or whatever. But they never are. They’re what can be trimmed, and so they are.

For instance, during the funding process to create The Outline, clearly not enough was allocated to pay staff, likely because it’s seen as a way to trim costs. At least, costs that aren’t concrete. “That can’t happen in the future,” is the message that needs to be sent.

The goal for the writers is a sustainable model that allows them to write and live. The goal for the owners is profitability. Between the two is a huge gap in priorities, and that’s what needs to change, no matter the specific outlet.

The boycott of freelance writers of The Outline is interesting, but maybe misfocused? The outlet’s model is clearly failing, so not writing for it may not do much. But boycotting properties (current and future) owned by The Outline’s management may send a stronger message?

I haven’t promoted my novel today, so this is that. It’s called Eastern Span, a neo-noir set in Oakland (circa 2013), featuring art by locals, and available for free or $, the latter of which will go to local homeless services. It can be downloaded at .

This is a big deal, particularly in SF. Voters in 2010 made “sitting/lying” on SF public streets a $100 ticket, and then 30 days in jail... Oh, there’s also currently a waitlist of 1,104 for a 90-day stay in a shelter.

I can’t tell if The Outline is good or not. It’s a pretty great publication, but also seems to lay off writers every other week?
