Many schools and districts have done away with field trips based on an assumption that they hold little educational value. But research by suggests otherwise. explains

Best part of these tributes to Romney — exemplar of virtue! paragon of decency! — is that they’re coming from the same people who SAVAGED him for an awkward turn of phrase that was meant to illustrate his commitment to hiring women for top-level positions. Heckuva job, everyone.

To hear someone finally say things like this... 'our greatest problem is not a failure to care enough; it's the reverse. It's our inclination to allow good intentions...to excuse lazy thinking, willful naiveté, & a refusal to make tough choices. 1/

'We allow the mantra of "best practices," vapid assertions of our love for kids, and the search for consensus to stand in for honest debate or critical analysis.' ...made me feel maybe I wasn't just crazy. (Plus, was doing the same over at the CK blog.) Thx again.

  9. Contrary to popular narrative, “Proper measurements show that US child poverty has fallen by at least 50 percent since the 1980s.” Huge gains for Black & Latino youth. Kudos to for pushing advocates to acknowledge this “inconvenient” truth.

  10. In most schools, district leaders choose products and programs for teachers. This leads to waste, unused stuff, & frustration. Empowering teachers to make those decisions could lead to smarter purchases, less lost time, & better results for kids.

For a person who claims to oppose socialism, President Trump spent a lot of time in his SOTU address touting central planning, federal intervention in nonfederal matters, and a big-government spending spree—policies that threaten our rights and undermine our long-term prosperity.

  14. Gee, seems much more skeptical & hard-nosed when reporting on (much smaller) gifts by conservative donors. This piece reads more like a supersized version of the press release.

Back in 2015, observed that Andy Weir's 'The Martian' "makes being educated and clever seem practical, important, and kind of cool." The film adaptation—not so much.

Procurement! Akin to pensions, one of the least sexy, but most important system topics... Here's our take from a while back, including recc for more direct school level purchasing power, and better connecting markets to teacher needs.

What would happen if we took all the $$ we spend on teacher PD & instructional resources, divided it up, & gave individual teachers control over their own share? This is a creative idea I've listened to Mike G. hash out over many walks around Fresh Pond. Worth a read. ⬇️

  20. A typically fascinating piece from the nimble mind of Mike Goldstein on fixing implementation, empowering educators, & helping schools buy stuff that works. Even if you think you know what he’s got in mind, it’s 50-50 that you’ll be surprised. Read it.

  21. This month, to mark a decade of , we’re revisiting 20 classic posts. #19 in our countdown reminds me that, for all the energy we devote to education, we'd do well to also try a helluva lot harder to promote a popular culture that celebrates smart.
