The Daily Beast confirmed the report with a source saying, “How the fuck did Avenatti find out?” https://politicalwire.com/2018/05/08/cohen-received-500k-from-russian-oligarch/ …

This seems to bring the #StormyDaniels thread and the Russian influence over our elections thread together, which raises this question: Why did Mueller refer Cohen to SDNY?

Question, because I really don’t know. Did Mueller refer all matters Cohen or just select ones? Couldn’t he have carved out the Russian payment?

To nail him on state charges which Trump can't pardon? Then maybe later prosecute on federal after Trump is a sure thing?

I think Cohen created a pay for play scheme by selling access to the President. I suppose that's what SDNY is investigating, while Mueller keeps jurisdiction over all Russia related matters.

Spread the investigation across multiple jurisdictions in case Trump manages to shut down the Muller probe? Does this make sense, legally?

It can be referred right back to Mueller; it probably already has.

Mueller didn't. Mueller routinely advises his benevolent overlord [Rosenstein] of possible cases swirling around. Rosenstein then does what he's supposed to do with a multi-district conspiracy: Decide who/where/when to pursue a case. If all $ was paid in SDNY, it's a SDNY case

Given the sensitivity of targeting Trump's lawyer, he might effectively be using SDNY as his "clean team" to stay as above board as possible.

Federal crimes - like Cohen's - are handled in Fed Ct by US Attys, Fed Judge, etc. Cohen's case, yes, is in NY. But that doesn't make it a "state case". Fed courthouse, FBI, Federal Grand Jury: most likely a federal case.

Maybe he didn't. The NY office had to execute the searches, but we don't know if they have taken over more than that, do we? I think Mueller's still involved.

Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein is involved in all DoJ criminal investigations, and any DepyAG office routinely directs cases to one office or other. Beyond that, I defer to @pbump (who answered these questions a month ago)https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/politics/wp/2018/04/09/to-search-michael-cohens-home-and-office-the-fbi-had-to-clear-a-higher-than-normal-bar/ …

Best speculation I’ve seen is from @emptywheel who posited that the referral happened before they learned of the Vekselberg involvement.
