Anyone quote this from CJ Roberts in the partisan gerrymandering cases? It’s from His opinion in the Arizona campaign finance case: “And those who govern should be the *last* people to help decide who *should* govern.”

1/ Takes for posting that. Gonna make it my motto! That is a huge part of what is wrong with our elections. Elections were meant to be citizen-run where we told the Gov't who got elected. Now elections are run as a function of the gov't to tell us whether they got re-elected.

2/ But we as citizens have truly abdicated our role to truly run our elections, and are happy to leave it to the local election official and hope that they are both honest and competent and act in non-partisan ways. Probably naive.

Maybe more citizens should consider serving as election workers.

Absolutely! And candidates and parties should take their responsibility to appoint watchers seriously.

Dunno if anyone quoted it in those cases, but I'm pretty invested in that line ... https://ssrn.com/abstract=2522906 …

Thus supporting the view that judges ("those who govern") should not decide the issue - unless they can come up with judicially discoverable and manageable standard that is transparent and fair to all sides. Are you suggesting that one has suddenly been discovered?
