Either way, it is not clear that this keeps Cohen out of legal trouble for either making an excessive campaign contribution or serving as a conduit for Trump's unreported campaign expenditure. Just because Cohen says it is not campaign related doesn't make it so.https://twitter.com/jbarro/status/963627632385581056 …

I would note: Michael Cohen says neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump Campaign reimbursed him for the payment to Stormy Daniels. He does not say that Donald J. Trump did not reimburse him. https://twitter.com/tparti/status/963624434140614656 …

Isn't it taxable income for Trump since Cohen paid an obligation of Trump's? And for Cohen did he advance non-litigation-related costs in violation of the RPC's?

Oh my, there's just nothing better than legal minds discussing porn star payments on behalf of the President of the United States. Please keep talking, it's a public service. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Likely gets him in trouble from a professional ethics perspective as well, could lead to NYS Bar invesigation.

Why, don't all attorneys pay off their client's porn stars from their personal funds?

I’d presume that he’d need to provide a basis for the payment that isn’t for the benefit of the campaign. As soon as that’s explained to him, his story should get interesting.

Serious question: would it be fair to say that most lawyers really don't understand campaign finance law?

That last line is like the overarching theme of the Republican Party. Just because someone says it, doesn't make it so.

Thanks. With Trump-appointed US Attorneys and pardon authority, are there any consequences? Are there State law issues?

If it’s not a campaign contribution, it’s arguably a taxable personal gift.

Legally it seems to be less of a problem if Trump had paid. Even if it was deemed a campaign expenditure, it’s a reporting violation on how you’d account for money loaned by the candidate. As described though it’s a 3rd party contribution well in excess of the limits.
