Isn't it taxable income for Trump since Cohen paid an obligation of Trump's? And for Cohen did he advance non-litigation-related costs in violation of the RPC's?
Either way, it is not clear that this keeps Cohen out of legal trouble for either making an excessive campaign contribution or serving as a conduit for Trump's unreported campaign expenditure. Legally it seems to be less of a problem if Trump had paid. Even if it was deemed a campaign expenditure, it’s a reporting violation on how you’d account for money loaned by the candidate. As described though it’s a 3rd party contribution well in excess of the limits.
