This isn't my area, and I think it's fair to say the author has a consistent ideological angle in his stories, so I'd really like to hear a response from those who defend such practices. Interesting, thanks Rick.

The Pa fight is particularly nasty and I don't think anyone looks particularly good on that state Supreme Court or in the Legislature

Agree. It’s odd not to have opinion yet. That said, there are strong legal arguments for the state constitution to provide better protection for voting rights and to limit partisan gerrymandering more than the fed constitution. I assume that’s what opinion will say.

Agree it made sense to issue order quickly w opinion to follow, given exigencies, but it’s been 15 days since Jan. 22. If I were on that court I’d pull some all-nighters to get the opinion out already.

courts used to worry about that kind of thing http://global.oup.com/us/companion.websites/fdscontent/uscompanion/us/static/companion.websites/gillman/instructor/Chapter_7/fergus_v_marks.pdf …

Though it didn't always stop them from intervening "If, at the next ensuing election, the State is without a valid law ... the responsibility must rest with the Legislature and not with the judicial department of the State government." http://global.oup.com/us/companion.websites/fdscontent/uscompanion/us/static/companion.websites/gillman/instructor/Chapter_7/parker_v_state_ex_rel_powell.pdf …

Aren’t they coming up on the deadline in the order for new maps? The legislature drawing new maps without the benefit of an explanatory opinion is a Bad Idea, particularly because it smells like the court wanting to draw the maps itself.

I’m not sure anything will hurry up a court not in a hurry.

True, but if they intend the districts to be redrawn in time for the midterms, better to put the order out now and issue opinion next week.
