I read this letter a little bit differently. They are saying he is a serious academic and his scholarship is sound. But they stay away from saying anything about his qualifications for the top management role at the Census.

I am comforted by some of the names on this letter who are excellent academics of high integrity. Hopefully in this new role, Brunnell lives up to the trust that others seem to have in him. If he doesn’t, I hope those same people will call him out.
