Concessions by losing candidates are important not for their direct legal effect (they have none), but for reinforcing democratic legitimacy and the rule of law. Roy Moore not conceding sends the message to his supporters that Doug Jones' #ALSen victory was illegitimate.https://twitter.com/PaulNolting/status/945789749914202112 …

Moore's lack of respect for Constitutional government predates this latest saga by decades.

And who started this trend? Trump. No one talks about it anymore, but he said in October 2016 he'd only accept the election result if he won. So now that he won, a much scarier question: what happens when the sitting POTUS doesn't accept the result when he loses in 2020?

It’s pretty damn clear at this point that the Republican Party doesn’t give a 💩 about the rule of law or preserving our democracy. Moore is just following their example.

That's why Moore hasn't conceded. He couldn't care less about stupid abstract concepts like "democracy" and "social contract" and "unity." He lost and is angry and hopes this hurts Jones and that it makes it ever so slightly more likely Moore wins in the future.

Of course, Roy Moore was always behaving as if the US Government was illegitimate.

Legitimacy of Jones' win is conferred by the certified election results, which face no serious challenge. By acting to confirm the opinions of a majority of voters that he is unfit, Moore is further discrediting the viewpoint he represents.

Trump would have done the same thing if he had lost the Electoral College in addition to the popular vote.

Moore's raising money off it. The reason WaPo came up with the story of Moore's interest in teenagers was because they were in AL doing a story on the non-profit foundation scam he & wife had been running & living off of for years.

I mean, that is likely his goal. He doesnt care that he lost he wants to make sure everyone knows he thinks he should have won. That is the world we live in now.

Almost certainly. Sending the message that elections are only legitimate is Side A wins opens the door for things that bias the results towards Side A.

So Moore will probably run again in 2020, giving Jones the best possible chance at reelection.
