What kind of representative democracy today says that Wyoming and Rhode Island should have as much voting power as Texas and California? Don't reply to me that we don't like in a democracy we live in a "republic." This bores me.

Lots of folks mistaking my normative argument for a positive one. That is, I'm arguing that the division of power should not be this way given today's equality norms. I'm not questioning why the Senate was constructed to equalize power among different sized states.

But almost never have my mentions been full of such vitriol, between responses to this post and Republican gloating in response to my post on end of blue slips for judicial nominations.

They did it because of equality. What you’re saying is discrimination against other states because they are not the same as CA, NY, or TX. That is like saying a person is sub human because they’re not like most other humans. States have rights too, and that’s why they’re equal.

"today's equality norms" Are you arguing that the government, instead of being organized by geography, i.e., states, should be organized by current social justice concerns, i.e., race, gender, etc.? If so, that's a terrible idea.

Actually that is what you did. The government is set up so that the smaller states are not looked over and ignored for the power of the large states. What would be the incentive for a candidate to visit small states when they can win with just the large?

there is equality among citizens and then there is equality among the States the House of Representatives is more structured to serve the first interest while the Senate is more structured to serve the second and in a federated union of independent States, both are important

Professors like you are ruining our country by false teaching. The Founders are protecting our nation from itself by preventing mob rule. We absolutely do not live in a democracy but a Constitutional representative republic. Repealing the 17th amendment would help fix the senate.

Then what is the point of two legislative bodies at all? We can just stick with the House and dump the expense of the Senate.

The voices of people who live in Wyoming matter, and shouldn't be ignored because there are MORE people in LA. Further: if discussing how we are a Republic "bores" you, maybe you should consider a different line of work?

The positive argument—that Wyoming & Rhode Island don't have equal populations to Texas & California, therefore their political stature as equal states is antidemocratic—is implicit to anyone with a cursory knowledge of US geography and population distribution.
