Isn't the basic point that there's already an election under way to fill the remainder of Sessions' original term? Strange resigning now does nothing to alter that.

Yes, it's a bizarre idea, and if it worked the governor's party could hold any seat for the rest of the term through repeated resignations, constantly scheduling elections that never happen.
