So far my research has not uncovered any case where a state tried to cancel a Senate special election which was challenged in court. Likely because it so unbelievably undemocratic to try to do so.

The background context on Hewitt's undemocraric idea is that if the GOP got away with canceling an election in AL, next step could very well be the wholesale canceling of national elections in 2018 and 2020
