Think this is my first time stepping foot into @ChicagoKentLaw since I finished teaching here in 1997. Such wonderful memories...

I of course put in an election law question into the stack of index cards J Kagan may answer

My question has to do with whether it is good or bad for American democracy that
#scotus gets lots of election cases via mandatory appeal?Show this thread -
Here we go. J Kagan will be interviewed by Carolyn Shapiro

Kagan agrees with what J Scalia said that you can't take it personally when Justices disagree in good faith

Kagan says Chief is a great model for collegiality. Self interest keeps things cordial because Justices are repeat players

Is it a good idea for justices to speak at conventions of ideological organizations such as Fed Sox, ACS?
-
I don't see the issue with it, for either side. More speech is always better as long as it stays within traditional judicial ethical norms.
-
I think the issue is more the appearance of seeming to commune with only one side.
-
There is far more diversity of ideas among the FedSoc membership than people realize. I assume the same is true of ACS too.
-
I wonder about that. Not sure there's an ACS corollary to the libertarian-social-conservative rift in Fed Sox.
