There is no inherent reason a special presidential election, if pursuant to valid legislation, would have to employ the Electoral College.

I'm just reading the text of Art II Sec 1 re Congress power to "provide by Law" for the rare situation where both P & VP are "removed" https://twitter.com/dumptrump33/status/904331635495235584 …

provide by law to declare "what officer shall then act" as pres until "a pres shall be elected." dubious to read the EC out of that process

I assumed @tribelaw meant special election for the "Officer" who would serve until the next regular pres election.

as they say, Tribe has forgotten more con law than I'll ever know, but I read that as specifying an existing officer to act until election

How would election make one an "Officer", eligible to assume Presidency? Holding position of "President-Elect" doesn't make one an Officer.

In theory, could always create by statute an office of vice-vice-pres w/ no duties except to step in to Oval if other two go down

That's an "office" as Constitution understands it, but a weird one. Could get nominal salary, be impeachable. 3rd string QB

Yes, there is. I don't like the EC at all, but it is OBVIOUSLY the intended method for holding even special prez elections.

discussion is silly because if Dems control cong, they'd want Speaker to become POTUS under current succession. if they dont, no legislation

If Dems are smart, they'll want to hold an elec to halt legitimacy questions/unrest. Same for GOP. And if enough GOP votes 4 impeachment...
